Since FHWA launched the Smart City Challenge in December, 78 applicant cities applied with their ideas to combine technology, innovation and equity to improve the lives of their citizens. The seven finalists – Kansas City; Portland, Ore.; Pittsburgh; Austin; Columbus, Ohio; Denver, and San Francisco – made their final pitches recently for the bragging rights of winning the first ever challenge and $50 million in public and private grant money.
